SAT prep in West Caldwell, NJ

08/15/2014
As a new school year has begun, The Tutoring Center has high hopes for helping you achieve the best school year yet. However, there is an unfortunate, age old, presence in the education system. It was present in schools in the 1960s just as it is today, and that presences is Bullying.

Bullying can be classified as a repeated behavior that puts a person in harm, emotionally or physically. Some examples of bullying are:
- physical assault
- teasing
- making threats
- name calling
- cyber bullying
- spreading rumors
*Often a situation of bullying will contain several of these qualities.

28% of students between 6th and 12th grade admit to having been bullying. 7-10 students admit to being cyberbullied, which would be bullying through text message or social media. Bullying is a problem, and the problem is not an easy one to monitor or control. We can’t just make it go away. However, we can provide you with some tips to assist you if you are a child being bullied or if you are a parent of a child being bullied.

What to Do:

- Remind yourself that you did nothing wrong, the bully is the one who needs to change
- Tell someone you trust, your parent, a friend, or a teacher
- Keep a record of the things the bully(s) has done
- Take action-bullying can last for a long time if it continues to go unchecked

What not to Do:

- Do not try to deal with the problem alone, remember that there is nothing wrong with reaching out and asking for help
- Do not respond with violence
- Do not hide the situation from those you trust, they are the ones who can ultimately help you
- Do not be afraid of the consequences of getting help, it is most important that you are safe
- Lastly, and most importantly, do not believe the lies you hear, the problem they have truly lies within them!

When a child is being affected negatively by bullying at school, it is common for their grades to begin to drop. Aside from the above advice, you may also choose to enroll your child in a tutoring program. Remember that at The Tutoring Center in West Caldwell we have professional tutors who will treat your child with respect and allow them comfort in the learning process.
