Benefit From a Fun Reading Picnic!

The summer brings with it one noticeable benefit: Glorious rays of sunlight! While it is important to get out and enjoy it (while it lasts), there is no reason why these enjoyable outdoor outings can’t also be educational. The Tutoring Center, West Caldwell NJ has prepared the steps below on how to get the most out of a reading picnic.

What to Read, What to Read?

Your obvious first choice is going to be a textbook. While they have their benefits, a reading picnic needs to be enjoyable. Find a happy medium with your student on the book that you will both read and enjoy. Ideally, it should be one with a fast and complex story line full of twists and turns.

What to Pack, What to Pack?

In addition to the books you have just purchased or checked out of the library, you will need some sustenance for your brains. Stick with the classics like ham and salad sandwiches or even a PB&J, along with some juice and water. Of course, you will also need something to nibble on as you become entangled in the storyline! For this, some small cookies or candies are great to keep energy levels up.

What to Do, What to Do?

Now comes the easy part, find yourselves a quiet space where you can both read without distraction, and get right into your new stories! Once you have each read the first chapter, stop and take a break. As you break, discuss how you both feel about the story so far, any favorite characters, or even an idea where the story is going. After a quick chat and a drink, get back into reading for another few chapters before you stop for another delicious snack filled review. To make it more exciting, take small bets on what you each think will happen at the end of the book. For example, if your child correctly predicts how the story will end, they can choose what to eat for dinner that night. Similarly, if you win, then it looks like it’s a night free from dishes for you!
