SAT prep in West Caldwell, NJ

06/18/2015
As your teenager prepares for college there will be some big ticket items that they need and want to buy. This can be a great opportunity for them to start work, and your help can be just the advantage they need. Along your general homework help, The Tutoring Center in West Caldwell has some tips on how you can help your teenager prepare themselves for their first job application and interview.

Keep it current and relevant.

Guide them to make sure that their application matches the job they’re applying for. Alongside your teenager, use the internet to find sample applications for similar jobs. Pay attention to the format of the resumes; if you are applying for a job that focuses on education more than experience, then it would be beneficial for this information to be prominent. In addition to utilizing style examples, take note of the vocabulary used when listing similar experience, duties and responsibilities.

Tell me a time when...

When it comes to interviews, you can never be too prepared. There are many things you can do to help your teenager prepare for job interviews. Prior to the interview, research some sample questions relating to the job. It doesn’t matter if you are answering a question about complex engineering equations or your experience leading your debate club, the way you answer an interview question determines the likelihood of you getting the job.

Put on the spot!

Once you have a few sample question and answers ready, keep small cards around the house.  As your child passes by, surprise them with an interview question like: tell me a time when you helped a classmate during gym class.  Anything that catches them off guard and forces them to think before they answer can give them the advantage they need over other applicants.

There are many ways that you can help your child get the advantage when applying for jobs, and learning them with their parents is great for everyone. To complement these useful skills, our experts can provide reading, writing, and math help through one-to-one instruction or private tutoring in West Caldwell.
