Math Lessons at Home

No matter how adamant your child is that math isn’t going to be relevant to their life, the reality is that, as adults, they will rely on their math skills every single day. If your student could use a hand improving their math skills, The Tutoring Center, West Caldwell has some great ways you can help at home.

WiFi Equation

Your child’s computer, phone, tablet, and even their gaming device, all rely on an internet connection, which means WiFi, which means a WiFi password. Before you go to sleep each night, change the password of your WiFi to the answer of a math equation they struggle to remember or create your own, such as:
  • 300 x 50 = 15,000
    • Change the WiFi password to “3005015000”
  • 2, 5, 11, 17, and 23 are all…
    • Change the WiFi password to ‘Prime Numbers”
Of course, you can create any you would like which you believe will help your child.

Calculate a Snack

The snacks that you prepare for your children can be a great learning platform, whether it’s after school or on the weekend.
  • Once you have finished preparing containers with snacks, attach a sticky-note with a small math equation on it.
    • If your children can answer it correctly, then they can enjoy the treat.
  • If your children prefer individual candy bars, take them out of the bag and attach a small equation to each one.
    • Each time that your child wants to enjoy candy, ask them to answer the math question.
While it may not seem beneficial, given that the lessons are small and fit on a small piece of paper, the activity can help students to reinforce lessons they struggle to remember.
