SAT prep in West Caldwell, NJ

01/07/2015
This time of year offers a great opportunity to make positive changes in our lives. Perhaps your child has already made a New Year’s resolution to learn a musical instrument however, if they haven’t, The Tutoring Center in West Caldwell would like to offer just a few of the reasons that it’s a good thing to encourage!

Learning an instrument is not only fun and rewarding in itself, but brings a number of benefits, including:

Increased neuroplasticity

Scans taken of the brains of musicians show that playing an instrument activates a huge number of different regions of the brain simultaneously and promotes neuroplasticity, meaning it encourages the brain to develop new neural networks between sections meaning more effective, faster communication within the brain, and thus increased cognitive function overall.

Improved memory

Studies indicate that musicians are better able to create and recall memories than non-musicians. The biggest difference was seen in verbal memory (accuracy of recall of spoken information), and a good verbal memory is tremendously beneficial when it comes to taking in and learning information provided orally at school or college. A study published in Neuropsychology, Volume 17, No. 3 in 2003 claimed that children with five years of musical training were able to remember 20% more of information read aloud to them than their non-musical peers.

Strengthened links between hemispheres

The brain’s functions are roughly divided between the two hemispheres, with the left being focused on mathematical thinking, calculation, etc., and the right being focused on creative endeavors. The part of the brain that links the two and is largely responsible for communication between them, the corpus callosum, is larger and stronger in musicians than non-musicians. This means that musicians are far more likely to be imaginative and capable of inventive problem solving.

Now’s the time to prepare your child to head back to school for the new semester.
