Teach Your Children Outdoors

Summer is a great time to get outside with your youngster and enjoy the sun (if you can pry them away from the television screen for long enough)! Below are some great ideas from The Tutoring Center, West Caldwell on turning outdoor adventures into learning opportunities.

Reading Picnic

Reading isn’t always the most favored task for youngsters. It's not because they are disinterested in reading, but simply because their main exposure to the task involves only reading what their teacher dictates. Break this connection with a reading picnic. Pack what you need for a fun picnic in the park, however, make a quick detour to your local bookstore beforehand where you can allow your student to choose a book of their liking. Once they have decided, buy two copies. Once you are both at the park, instead of just sitting and reading until you both feel tired, take it chapter by chapter. After each chapter, stop and have a chat (with some snacks) about the story so far, which characters are your favorites, and where you think the story is going. You can even make small bets on what you each think will happen with the winner being rewarded with a small treat. This is not only a great activity to help your student build a positive connection with reading, but it also gives you the perfect opportunity to identify any reading challenges they are experiencing which need addressing.
