Checking in on Your Child's Goals

Now is the perfect time in the school year to touch base with your child and check on the progress they are making towards their goals. Below is a post from The Tutoring Center, West Caldwell which can help parents to make this conversation a productive and positive one.

What Are Their Goals and How Are They Tracking?

The first step is to find out what their goals are. If your children are like most then there is a good chance that they have not yet shared them with you. Once you have this, encourage a relaxed and truthful conversation about their progress. If you find that your child is falling behind, be sure to show support and encouragement for the work they have been putting in so far.
  • If your student has fallen behind, help them to find ways to get back on track. Often rearranging their schedules or routines to find additional study time or giving them a small amount of extra homework help can be all that’s needed.
  • Of course, there may be times when your child can’t realistically reach the goals they set. If this is the case, look to lower and adjust their goals to something which is reasonable.
Of course, it’s never ideal to reduce a goal which has been set, however, it’s better your student spends their time studying hard and working towards a goal they can achieve instead of just giving up.

Add Smaller Goals

If your child feels like they can and will achieve all of their goals by the end of the school year and will have additional time, look for smaller complementary goals which you can add to their list. As an example, if your child is reading and enjoying a series of books, look for other books written by the author which are connected to the primary series. Often, these will be shorter and only address a specific character or event from the main books. This can be a great way to maximize their learning but won’t make them feel overwhelmed.
