Computer Terms to Teach Your Child

We are living in a digital age, and it is likely that your child is teaching you these vocabulary words already. In case she is not, here is a list of technology terms your child should know to introduce her for the world of computers.
  • Backup - An extra copy of a file or document.
  • Cursor - A screen icon that moves when you move the mouse. The cursor is used to make a selection on the screen.
  • Desktop - The screen that appears if you are not browsing the Internet, reading a file, or playing a game. It is usually the screen that loads once you have booted the computer.
  • E-mail - A way to send a message from one computer to another.
  • Hardware- The physical devices used in or with your machine. The memory board, CD-ROM drive, and printer are examples of hardware.
  • Internet - A web-like connection of many computers that shows you what data other computer operators are sharing and you can share data with them.
  • Password - This is a secret code to protect your data and can keep others from accessing your computer or files.
  • Shortcut - An icon that links to a file or program.
  • Task bar - The bar beside the Start button that shows what programs are open.
  • Virus - Software that was written to do bad stuff to your computer.
